VOLUNTARY SIMPLICITY: UNPLUGGING THE CHRISTMAS MACHINE November 23, 2008 Our voluntary simplicity class invites everyone to spend the later part of November and the month of December studying the book Unplugging the Christmas Machine: a Complete Guide to Putting Love and Joy Back into the Season by Jo Robinson. Plan to attend one session or to attend them all. This book answers the questions the authors have heard most often in their many years of talking with people about Christmas, such as: "How can I reduce the stress of preparing for Christmas?" "How can I make our celebration more spiritual and less materialistic?" "How can I get my husband to be more enthusiastic about Christmas?" "How can I get my wife to relax and enjoy the celebration?" and "How can I help my children see that Christmas is more than just presents?" Facilitators: Diane Owen and Cheryl Kliewer, Hamline Room
October 5 – November 23 Our best decisions about life’s most important events are seldom made in a time of crisis. This class will assist us in making careful, wise and prayerful preparation for meeting life’s most important moments. This study inspires us to talk openly about faith and mortality. Topics include biblical and social perspectives on age and growing older, which practical legal decisions are important for everyone, what happens when we die, and how we can live each day to the fullest…starting today.’ It is important for those persons who are interested in this class to commit to attend the entire series. Nancy and Pat have many years of experience in working with families facing crisis. From the leader guide, ‘To live fully and die well requires deep personal faith as well as an inviting, vital, welcoming, supportive, and nurturing community of faith that presents opportunities to talk openly, honestly and frequently about the mystery of this last great experience of life in this world.’ There will be a participant guide for the study. Leaders: Nancy Wheeler Handlon, Minister of Congregational Care and Pat Hrabe, Parish Nurse, Mettam Conference Room.
Adult Education on Monday
ISAIAH BIBLE STUDY Mondays, December 1,8,15, 22 noon (Women’s group) Wednesdays, December 3, 10, 17 7:00-8:00 pm Leader: Pastor Amanda Larsen Isaiah is the most quoted text from the Hebrew Bible in the Christian New Testament. Our lectionary cycle places texts from Isaiah in the Advent and Lenten seasons. These have been traditionally interpreted as “fulfillment” passages, that is, Jesus did what the Hebrew prophets said would be done. This class will attempt to help us understand the original context of these passages, and see how traditional Christian readings are inadequate to understand God’s intentions in these scriptures. It should enrich your hearing of Isaiah in coming Advents and Lents. Ultimately, this class will help us see the ongoing work of God among all people.
Adult Education on Tuesdays(7:00–7:45 am)
Advent Yoga December 2,9,16,23, ECC floor. Advent is a time of waiting and preparing. It is also a very, very stressful time. This class will slow us down and open us up to God using the messages of Advent (peace, love, joy, hope) and the physical movement of modified yoga. Each session will include a devotion, some yoga, and a time of presence (Savanana). Participants will have to sign a waiver to participate in this class. Leader: Pastor Amanda Larsen
